What is inside Unit 12

One building, three ways to lose an afternoon

Escape quests

Three themed rooms behind one long hallway: a pirate ship, a jungle temple and a science lab that runs backwards. Forty to sixty minutes each, 2 to 8 players, one game master per room watching on camera and feeding hints when a team stalls.

Retro arcade hall

A pinball row, four air hockey tables, six skee-ball lanes, linked racing cabinets, rhythm games and a wall of classic 90s fighters. A $20 play card loads 100 credits. Wednesday evenings are unlimited play for $25.

Party rooms

Two private rooms off the arcade with a window onto the pinball row. Packages from $249 bundle a quest, arcade time, pizza from a kitchen three doors down and a host who handles the clean-up. You bring the cake.

Captain Redbeard's Lost Ledger

  • 45 min
  • Ages 8+
  • 2–6 players

Difficulty: easy to medium. A good first quest for families.

The captain hid the ship's accounts somewhere between the galley and the crow's nest. Find the ledger before the tide turns and the hatch locks.

About this quest
Thick tree roots draped over the carved stone walls of a ruined jungle temple

Temple of the Jade Monkey

  • 60 min
  • Ages 10+
  • 3–8 players

Difficulty: medium to hard. Our biggest room, and the one teenagers ask for.

Roots have swallowed the temple and the last expedition left in a hurry. Their notes are scattered, the idol is still inside, and the door reseals in an hour.

About this quest
Lab flasks, beakers and cylinders filled with bright pink, red, blue and green liquid on a white bench

Professor Fizz's Backwards Lab

  • 40 min
  • Ages 6+
  • 2–6 players

Difficulty: easy. Built for young kids with an adult in the room.

Everything the professor touched now runs in reverse: clocks, taps, the lab's rather rude parrot. Put it right, step by step, and get his experiment back on track.

Quests are $28 per person plus GST, or $22 for kids 12 and under, and every booking is private to your group. Same-day walk-ins are welcome whenever a start time is open.

The arcade hall

Just play. No tickets, no counters.

We opened with one rule for the arcade: nothing on the floor spits out tickets. Load a play card at the front desk, tap it on any machine, and a credit starts the game. Most machines take one credit, the linked racers and the big rhythm cabinets take two. A $20 card gets 100 credits, which for a nine-year-old is roughly two hours and a pretty good pinball education.

Wednesday from 16:00 to 21:00 the whole hall is unlimited play for $25. It is the best deal in the building, and the quietest night of the week if you want a pinball machine to yourself.

Who comes here

Grandparents included

Saturday mornings from 10:00 are our quietest stretch, and a lot of the crowd is three generations deep: a grandparent who remembers pinball the first time around, a parent who remembers the 90s fighters, and a kid who is about to beat both of them at air hockey. Sunday's first hour is a quiet hour with the music down and the flashing attract screens off.

Teens tend to show up Friday nights for the racing cabinets and the Jade Monkey temple. School groups come Tuesday to Friday mornings when the hall is otherwise closed. Corporate groups take over the party rooms on weekday afternoons and, without fail, get far too competitive over skee-ball.

Questions people ask before they come

Do I need to book, or can we just show up?

Arcade play is always walk-in. Escape quests are private bookings, so if you want a specific start time on a Friday night or a Saturday, reserve a few days ahead through the contact page or by phone. If a start time is open when you arrive, walk-ins can take it.

How old do kids need to be for the escape quests?

Professor Fizz's Backwards Lab is written for ages 6 and up with an adult in the room. Captain Redbeard's Lost Ledger suits ages 8 and up, and Temple of the Jade Monkey is for 10 and up. The age applies to the youngest player in the group, and the checker on the quests page will sort it out in ten seconds.

Is there parking?

Yes, a free lot right outside Unit 12 with about 60 stalls, plus two accessible stalls beside the step-free entrance. It fills up for a couple of hours on Saturday afternoons; the overflow row behind the building is ours too.

Do arcade machines give out tickets?

No. A play card holds credits, credits start games, and that is the whole system. There is no ticket counter and nothing to trade in. Kids play for the high score and the bragging rights.
